The talks about Canada's integration into the European Union (EU) are a response to the US tariff policy. Dmitry Levi, Associate Professor of the Department of European Studies at the Faculty of International Relations at St. Petersburg State University, expressed this opinion on Monday, October 21.

According to him, there is no need to talk about any serious integration.

Earlier, Politico newspaper wrote about the possibility of Canada joining the EU, RT reports. Experts interviewed by the publication agreed that, theoretically, Canada's accession to the European Union is possible, but unlikely.

"As for the potential use of international institutions, including the EU, for Canada and Canada's accession, to be honest, looking at the UK's experience, it is generally possible to say that the EU is an attractive economic agent today with a high degree of caution," Levy said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .

The political scientist called the rhetoric about Canada's greater integration with the European Union against Canada's integration with Mexico logical, especially against the background of the initiatives of the United States. According to the expert, this is more likely due to Canada's retaliatory negotiating position as part of a strategy to counter U.S. tariff policy.

"There is no need to talk about any serious integration," Levy stressed.

On March 28, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that the country intends to reduce its economic dependence on the United States and rebuild its economy taking into account Trump's policies. Carney also added that he would reject any attempts to weaken Canada, and the United States is no longer a reliable partner.
