The cause of Pope Francis' death could be a stroke. This was reported on April 21 by the Italian newspaper Repubblica, citing sources.

"Death occurred due to brain problems. Probably a stroke, it is not known whether it was hemorrhagic or not," the publication says.

The newspaper reported that the doctors who conducted the examination did not reveal an obvious connection between the death of the pontiff and the respiratory problems that had previously led to his hospitalization.

The death of Pope Francis at the age of 89 became known earlier in the day. It is noted that the pontiff died at his residence in the Vatican's Santa Marta house.

The last time the pope appeared in public was on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica during Easter celebrations the day before. The pontiff has been struggling with bilateral pneumonia for a long time.
