- The expert called the nomination of Berbok for the post of head of the UN General Assembly a strategic failure of Germany.

The nomination of the current head of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Annalena Burbock, to the post of head of the UN General Assembly (GA) is a strategic failure of Germany. Ruslan Andreev, a political consultant and expert at the Polylogue Group, told Izvestia on April 21.
Focus magazine reported that German diplomats fear that the nomination of the current head of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Annalena Burbock, to the post of head of the UN General Assembly may deprive the country of its seat on the UN Security Council, where Germany expects to occupy one of the non-permanent seats in 2026. It was clarified that the politician's candidacy for the post of chairman of the UN General Assembly could deprive Germany of the support of the countries of the Global South in the Security Council elections due to its anti-Russian and pro-Israel position.
"In this situation, we can rather talk about the total reputational crisis in Germany, which Annalena Burbock has personified since her arrival in the cabinet. The decision to nominate her for the post of chairman of the UN General Assembly is another strategic failure that could deprive Germany of the chance to get a non—permanent seat in the UN Security Council," Andreev said.
According to him, in the countries of the Global South, the politician is perceived not as a neutral diplomat and a defender of German interests, but as an ideological activist who constantly broadcasts a "Euroglobalist" view of the world.
"Politicians like Berbok, [Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Friedrich] Merz, [German Defense Minister Boris] Pistorius and other similar candidates for leadership in Germany are representatives of the old generation of European bureaucrats and globalists, whose approaches do not correspond to the era of multipolarity and systemic transformations," Andreev said.
He stressed that the current German government is unstable, as indicated by the continued growth in popularity of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party and the growing irritation of German citizens against the background of decisions on Ukraine.
On March 18, the DPA news agency reported that the German government had proposed Burbok as a candidate for the post of President of the UN General Assembly for 2025-2026. According to the rules of the organization, elections are held no later than three months before the regular session, which is held annually from September to December.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the German government's plans strange. According to her, it would be strange to see the granddaughter of a Nazi who is proud of her grandfather's "feat" in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Victory as chairman of the UN General Assembly.
