Canada's entry into the European Union (EU) is unlikely, but possible. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on April 21, citing experts.

"The issue of EU membership will not be on the ballot in this month's Canadian elections, but polls show that Canadians are intrigued by the idea of joining the bloc," the publication says.

According to the newspaper, Canada and the EU are united not only by economic ties, but also by the pressure exerted on the countries by trade duties imposed by US President Donald Trump.

In a comment to Politico, Gisele Bosse, professor of the Department of External Support for EU Democracy at Maastricht University, stressed that the European Union includes states whose territories are not located on the European continent.

Frank Schimmelfennig, professor of European politics at the Swiss Higher Technical School of Zurich, told the newspaper that Canada meets the requirements for EU countries.

Earlier, on March 28, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that the country intends to reduce its economic dependence on the United States and rebuild its economy taking into account Trump's policies. Carney also added that he would reject any attempts to weaken Canada, and the United States is no longer a reliable partner.

On March 13, the Canadian authorities filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the duties imposed by the United States on Canadian steel and aluminum. According to the Canadian authorities, the measures imposed by the United States violate Washington's obligations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) of 1994.
