If requested by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), it will be necessary to mobilize young men between the ages of 18 and 25. This was announced on April 21 by Alexander Gladun, Deputy Director of the Institute of Demography and Quality of Life at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

"From a political [point of view], lowering the age of mobilization is a matter for the military. They should consider their needs in age categories, and if there is a need for 18-25 year olds, then they need to be mobilized," he said in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

Gladun stressed that the mass death of 18-25 year—old Ukrainians will lead to increased demographic problems in the country, since their generation is the smallest due to the low birth rate.

He admitted that the mobilized young people could be used in the rear units, but stressed that the final decision would remain with the military.

On April 12, Shamil Krutkov, commander of the 93rd Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said that Ukraine might need to mobilize 18-year-old young people. He added that volunteers and forcibly mobilized men are not enough to continue the conflict.

Earlier, on February 8, Ukrainian prisoner of war Maxim Zolotarenko said that the idea of contracts for service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine for citizens over the age of 18 was unreasonable. According to him, these are children who "haven't really lived."
