To become a chief accountant, it is necessary to have a higher economic education, mainly in the field of Accounting, analysis and Audit, as well as at least five years of work in the specialty. But even having an education and experience will not replace the ability to organize work clearly and quickly navigate changes in financial, tax and economic legislation.

Since the mid-90s, the Glavbukh magazine has been published in Russia to help chief accountants, a professional publication that publishes the latest news, reviews, and accounting instructions. The first issue of the magazine was published on April 21, 1994. This date was later chosen to celebrate the Day of the Chief Accountant.

It is celebrated on the day of the signing of the law "On Accounting" in 1996 (since 2013, a new federal law on accounting has been in force in the Russian Federation. — Ed.)

At the same time, a number of regions have established their own professional dates. So, on November 16, Moscow Accountant's Day is celebrated in the capital, and the day before that, St. Petersburg accountants receive congratulations. In the same month, accounting specialists from the Krasnoyarsk, Perm territories and Tatarstan are congratulated.

The International Accountant's Day, founded by the United Nations, also takes place in autumn. The celebration is timed to coincide with the release of the world's first book on accounting, The Sum of Arithmetic, Geometry, Relations and Proportions, written by Italian mathematician Luca Pacioli more than five centuries ago. This work describes the accounting methods that are used to this day. The celebrations are held annually on November 10.
