The Nordic countries of Europe have lagged far behind Russia in the development of unmanned technologies for the Arctic. This was reported on April 20 by the German newspaper Tagesspiegel.

"The northern NATO countries are now trying to catch up — and increasingly failing due to the local climate," the publication says.

The authors of the material noted that the Russian Federation began creating a complex of drones in the Arctic 10 years ago. As indicated in the publication, the Russian company Zala Aero has long been developing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) adapted to the extreme temperatures of the Arctic region.

"Russia is ahead of us in development by about four to five years," Johan Juovinen, a lieutenant colonel at the Swedish Defense Academy, told the newspaper.

Earlier, on April 18, the Financial Times newspaper reported that the UK plans to expand its military presence in the Arctic amid increasing interest in this part of the world. The relevant report was prepared by a group of experts led by former NATO Secretary General George Robertson at the initiative of the Government of the country.
