The first symptoms of tick-borne diseases may appear only a month after infection. On Monday, April 21, Olga Stolyarova, an infectious diseases specialist at the Be Healthy clinic on Sretenka, told Gazeta.Ru».

"For example, the most characteristic early symptom of Lyme disease (borreliosis) is erythema migrans (a red spot that increases in size and often resembles a target) may appear on the body 3-30 days after a tick bite," the expert said.

However, she added that in exceptional cases, erythema may be completely absent.

The doctor mentioned common symptoms in the early stages, including fever, weakness, joint and muscle pain, and enlarged lymph nodes.

As Stolyarova pointed out, the symptoms of tick-borne encephalitis can appear one to two weeks after the bite, but in rare cases this time reaches up to a month.

So, according to the interlocutor of the publication, fever, headache, nausea and general weakness are possible at the initial stage of the disease. As the disease progresses, neurological disorders occur, including seizures, paralysis, and memory impairment, the doctor noted.

Similar symptoms are observed with anaplasmosis (ehrlichiosis), the first signs of which appear one to two weeks after infection: fever, chills, headache and muscle pain, nausea.

Stolyarova explained that the late onset of symptoms is due to the characteristics of the infection. If such symptoms occur, the doctor called for immediate contact with an infectious disease specialist and undergo an examination, including serodiagnosis for antibodies (IgM and IgG) to borrelia and tick-borne encephalitis virus, as well as a general blood and urine test to detect inflammatory processes.

April 8, President of the Russian Cynological Federation (RCF) Vladimir Golubev told Izvestia that often various misconceptions of dog breeders about fleas and ticks endanger the health of their pets. So, among the misconceptions is the belief that tick medications work immediately. As explained in the RCF, there is no such drug that would instantly cause the death of a tick or protect a pet immediately after application.
