Tea, being one of the most common drinks, requires a careful approach: its composition, method of preparation and compatibility with other ingredients can affect the condition of a person with diabetes. Alyona Smirnova, a general practitioner and member of the Ahmad Tea Center for Industry expertise, told Gazeta about this on April 20.Ru».

When choosing tea for diabetics, it is important to consider not only its variety, but also the presence of additives, the expert noted. In moderation, the classic options are allowed — black and green tea without sugar and flavorings. However, the doctor reminded that these drinks contain antioxidants, tannins and caffeine, which can affect insulin sensitivity.

Herbal and leafy teas without sugar can also be included in the diet. Despite the fact that they do not have a therapeutic effect, they can be considered as a useful substitute for sugary drinks. For example, according to Smirnova, blueberry leaf is rich in glycosides, flavonoids and chromium. The latter, in turn, promotes the effective absorption of glucose. In addition, blueberry leaf has an antioxidant effect and helps to normalize metabolism.

Chamomile, known for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, may be useful for regulating the digestive tract, the doctor said. Chamomile tea can be used as a mild gastrointestinal regulator for diabetics, the doctor said.

She also called for avoiding drinks with honey, glucose syrup or cane sugar because of their high glycemic index. In addition, according to Smirnova, herbs with a tonic effect (ginseng, eleutherococcus, lemongrass) should be treated with caution, as they can reduce the effectiveness of sugar-lowering drugs.

Summing up, the specialist reminded that teas and herbal decoctions are not a medicine, but they can become part of a balanced diet if they are properly included in the diet.

Earlier, on April 17, nutritionist Natalia Pavlyuk stated that in studies on coffee, there is no division into natural and instant, which allows us to equate them to each other. She noted that studies usually indicate the benefits of this drink, for example, it prolongs life, is useful for reducing the risk of cancer, arrhythmia, and cardiovascular diseases.
