The trade duties that the United States will impose from July 1, 2025 on tomatoes imported from Mexico may lead to a significant increase in prices. This was reported on April 18 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

"The current agreement has failed to protect American tomato producers from unfair prices for Mexican imports," the US Department of Commerce said in a statement.

The article clarifies that the American side currently imports about 70% of tomatoes from Mexico. At the same time, according to experts, after the introduction of restrictions, a 10% increase in the cost of this product is expected. However, agricultural companies are preparing for higher rates.

On February 1, US President Donald Trump signed a decree imposing trade tariffs of 25% on goods from Canada, China and Mexico. At the same time, he promised to impose duties on goods from the EU. With this decision, Trump seeks to reduce the flow of the opioid fentanyl across the border, as well as the flow of migrants.

Chinese economist Andrew Leung, in turn, told Izvestia that the tariffs that Trump is imposing on imports from China and Mexico will lead to an increase in consumer prices in the United States itself.
