WSJ cited the reason for Trump's suspension of the imposition of duties
US President Donald Trump decided to suspend the imposition of trade duties after a conversation with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik. This was reported on April 18 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
"On April 9th, the financial markets went crazy. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wanted President Trump to suspend his aggressive global tariff plan. But there was a big obstacle.: Peter Navarro, Trump's tariff—loving trade adviser, who constantly hung around the Oval Office," the publication found out.
However, Lutnik and Bessent still managed to find a window for an unplanned conversation with the American leader and were able to convince him to abandon the imposition of duties.
On February 1, US President Donald Trump signed a decree imposing trade tariffs of 25% on goods from Canada, China and Mexico. At the same time, he promised to impose duties on goods from the EU. With this decision, Trump seeks to reduce the flow of the opioid fentanyl across the border, as well as the flow of migrants.
Chinese economist Andrew Leung, in turn, told Izvestia that the tariffs that Trump is imposing on imports from China and Mexico will lead to an increase in consumer prices in the United States itself.
