On April 19, the second stage of negotiations between Iran and the United States took place in Rome. The Iranian delegation was led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, and the United States by the President's special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.

A day earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed that Russia could become a mediator and play any role in the negotiations between the United States and Iran.

The first round of negotiations took place on April 12. During the meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and the US President's special envoy for the Middle East, Stephen Witkoff, exchanged the positions of their governments in the presence of the Omani Foreign Minister.
