At least 20 people have been killed in clashes between nomadic and agricultural settlements in eastern Nigeria. This was reported on Saturday, April 19, by the Vanguard newspaper, citing police officials.

The incidents were recorded in Benue State on the border with neighboring Cameroon.

"At the moment, the tragic loss of 20 lives on the Sanker axis has been confirmed. <...> These are not just numbers; they are fathers, mothers, children, brothers and sisters whose lives were cut short by senseless violence," the message says.

It is specified that groups of nomadic shepherds armed with machine guns attacked the settlements of Logo, Tuluv, Saror, Ukum and Mbawar. They indiscriminately opened fire on local residents, farmers, and those who could not escape.

Clashes arise due to the rivalry between nomads and the settled population for water sources and land.

Earlier, on April 14, it was reported that unknown assailants with weapons attacked two ancient villages in the Nigerian state of Plateau, killing about 50 people. Dozens more people were injured.
