- The media reported on the ongoing 100 years of experience with dripping pitch

The longest scientific experiment in the world, The Dripping Pitch Experiment, which has been going on for 100 years and is being conducted at the University of Queensland in Australia, is trying to prove that some substances that seem solid are actually liquid. The Upworthy portal writes about this on April 4.
"The experiment with a drop of resin began in 1927 with a scientist who had a hunch. Thomas Parnell, a physicist at the University of Queensland in Australia, believed that a mass of resin that appears to be solid at room temperature and breaks like glass if hit with a hammer is actually a liquid. Therefore, he set up an experiment, which became the longest and slowest experiment on Earth, to test his hypothesis," the publication says.
The dripping peck experience was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records due to its duration.
During the experiment, scientists observe how the pitch, that is, the substance remaining after the distillation of stone resins, falls in a glass funnel. At the same time, the first drop fell only eight years after the start of the experiment. On average, this happens only once every 10 years.
It is noteworthy that no one has ever witnessed a pitch fall. The authors of the material noted that this happens very quickly and a "strange circumstance" makes it difficult to capture the process every time.
However, now it will be possible to witness such a rare event due to the fact that the university organized a live broadcast of the experience with dripping pitch.
Earlier, on April 13, it was reported that scientists had discovered a floating lake on Kamchatka's Shiveluch volcano during field work. It is specified that the water temperature at the sides of the lake reaches 52 degrees. There is a bubbling cauldron in the center of the reservoir. Its diameter is up to 3 m, the height of the emissions is about 40 cm.
