The Shroud of Turin (the cloth in which the body of Jesus Christ is supposed to have been wrapped after the crucifixion) is a real mystery to scientists because it has amazing properties that are difficult to explain. On April 18, scientist Liberato De Caro from the Institute of Crystallography of the National Research Council told Izvestia.

"If a three-dimensional body were wrapped in a sheet, there would have to be side prints that would create an image of a deformed body. However, there are none, and we only see a three—dimensional image, which has more information than a real three-dimensional body," the researcher commented.

According to him, in order to understand how the image was formed, scientists tried to determine its age. So, in 1988, it was discovered that the carbon-14 content indicates a meteoric epoch. However, a few years ago, in 2022, a new dating appeared, which suggests that the Turin shroud could indeed have wrapped the body of Jesus.

In 2024, another experiment was conducted — a computer simulation. Scientists note that if someone wraps a sheet around a three-dimensional body, then the most likely areas of contact will be lateral. However, these areas are missing from the image on the shroud.

"It's easier to say that the Shroud of Turin is a medieval fake than to solve the problem of explaining how the image was formed. But this is really a challenge to our scientific knowledge, and it proves that this image has unique properties. <...> We were thinking about low reliefs that do not have lateral deformations, since they do not have lateral parts. But there is no such equipment that can explain the incredible body image," said Liberato De Caro.

Earlier that day, Cinzia Giannini, director of the Institute of Crystallography of the National Research Council, said that a new X-ray technique was used to study the sample of the Shroud of Turin.
