The doctor talked about the benefits and harms of kefir for the body

Kefir has a wide range of beneficial properties, but in some cases its use may be contraindicated. Evgeny Belousov, PhD, gastroenterologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg clinic), told Izvestia about this.
According to the expert, the main value of kefir is the content of probiotics, beneficial bacteria that support a healthy intestinal microflora. This helps to improve digestion, better absorption of nutrients and strengthen the immune system. Kefir is especially useful for irritable bowel syndrome, constipation and diarrhea, and can also help people with lactose intolerance.
"Kefir contains many vitamins and minerals, including calcium, B-group vitamins, especially B12 and riboflavin, as well as magnesium, phosphorus and vitamin K2," Belousov explained.
The expert noted that the antioxidant properties of kefir help protect cells from oxidative stress, and its regular consumption in moderation contributes to weight control by improving the feeling of satiety.
In addition, the high content of calcium and vitamin K2 makes kefir useful for maintaining bone health and preventing osteoporosis.
However, the doctor warned that kefir is not suitable for everyone. People with severe lactose intolerance or allergy to dairy products should avoid using it. Kefir should be carefully introduced into the diet if there are digestive problems, and it is better for the elderly and people with weakened immune systems to consult a doctor before use.
"In some cases, kefir can cause gas formation or other problems when first introduced into the diet or consumed in large quantities, especially in people with intestinal disorders," the doctor warned.
The frequency of kefir consumption, as stated by the specialist, may vary depending on individual preferences, health status and goals. He recommended drinking 1-2 glasses of kefir per day — this amount provides the necessary probiotics and nutrients without the risk of excessive consumption.
However, in order to maximize the benefits of kefir and maintain intestinal health, you should include it in your diet regularly, for example, several times a week.
"As with any food, it is important to maintain a balanced and varied diet. Kefir can be an excellent addition to a healthy lifestyle if consumed in reasonable quantities and in combination with other sources of nutrients," concluded the gastroenterologist.
Earlier, on April 17, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the State University of Education Irina Lyalina told Izvestia which foods are good for the intestines and which, on the contrary, will cause harm. The expert noted that fatty fried foods are considered the most harmful to the stomach and intestines. In addition, carbonated drinks, sausages and strong tea are harmful. Among the healthy foods are porridges, some fruits and jelly. In addition, it overloads the digestive tract, disrupts the microflora and is addictive to fast food, because it is very rich in saturated fats, salt and preservatives.
