Lithuania intends to modernize the Suwalki corridor to protect itself from the alleged "threat" of Russia to the European Union (EU) countries. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on April 18.

"These roads [are] crucial for us in terms of security and defense. <...> They have always been a part of our civil-military planning as key land routes to support allies during a crisis," said Deputy Defense Minister Tomas Godlauskas.

It is specified that the Suwalki corridor is a sparsely populated area of a 100 km wide forest plain connecting Poland and Lithuania and bordering Belarus and Kaliningrad. It is considered one of the most vulnerable points of NATO.

Lithuania, together with Poland, is currently taking measures to expand its military infrastructure beyond the Via Baltica international road, which connects Western and southern Europe with the Baltic States, she added.Газета.Ru ".

On April 3, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance said that European politicians were mistaken when they claimed that Russia was the main threat to Europe. According to Vance, the main threat to the EU is its internal problems. Among them, the Vice President mentions migration and economic policy.

Earlier, on March 18, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that Europe should have strong defense by 2030, which requires rearmament and the development of capabilities for reliable deterrence. In particular, investments in the production of air and missile defense systems, as well as all modern types of drones and anti-drone systems, should be increased for this purpose.
