The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaya Kallas, threatened European diplomats and politicians that they would face "consequences" if they visited Russia to participate in the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Victory. However, the European leaders who were going to Moscow were not deterred by such blackmail. Details can be found in the Izvestia article.

I tried to cancel Victory Day

"At the ministerial meeting, it was very clearly stated by various member states that any participation in the parade or celebrations on the occasion of May 9 in Moscow would most likely not be from the European side," said Estonian Chief Diplomat Kaya Kallas. The statement was made at a press conference following the meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on April 14.

She also warned that European officials who travel to Moscow on May 9 will face "consequences." Kallas especially stressed that the participation of EU candidate countries in the Victory Day Parade is also undesirable. According to her, the warning has been brought to these states.

Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braje issued a similar warning. Having gathered colleagues from Balkan countries that want to become members of the European Union (formally, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia) for dinner, she said that the participation of EU candidate states in the Victory Parade on Red Square "does not correspond to the policy of European values."

May 9 marks the 80th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War. Many world leaders and official representatives have been invited to the event in the Russian capital. In total, more than 20 heads of state and government are expected to take part in the parade in honor of the 80th anniversary of the Victory.

Among them are Serbian President Alexander Vucic and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Secretary General of the Communist Party of Vietnam Toh Lam, Presidents of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko and Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said Callas had no right to threaten European officials with "consequences" for visiting Moscow to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism. He also stressed that it is necessary to show respect for the fact that historically the greatest contribution to the defeat of Nazi Germany was made by the peoples of the Soviet Union.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic also said that he would not refuse to travel to the Victory Day Parade in Moscow on May 9, despite political pressure from the European Union. He also ordered Serbian military personnel to participate in the march on Red Square on May 9.

"It seems to me that the sky is about to collapse on my head from the pressure of my trip to Moscow. <...> I do not know what others will decide, but I have not changed my mind," Vucic said.

He added that Serbia has made a significant contribution to the fight against fascism, which Belgrade is proud of, "unlike many countries that are trying to rewrite history at the global, continental, regional and even local levels."

The EU is turning into a tyranny

Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, commented that the Kremlin considers the statement of the head of Kallas to be incorrect, and her words to be very harsh.

"The assessment of these threats should be given to those sovereign states that it threatens," the Kremlin's official representative said. According to his estimates, there are countries in Europe that do not accept the rhetoric of Kai Kallas.

Peskov added that the date of May 9 is very important for Russia. "It is especially important right now, when Nazism has settled in Europe again and when in Europe we do not see a unanimous desire to eradicate it immediately," explained the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called for a tough fight against the rewriting of history by the EU countries. The Foreign Minister stressed that in the Baltic States, Poland and a number of other EU countries, the criminals convicted by the Nuremberg Tribunal are being equalized with those who liberated Europe from fascism.

And Sergei Naryshkin, director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), believes that the EU countries are trying to rewrite the history of the twentieth century so that "the younger generation believes that Russia was not the victor of Nazism in World War II."

The General Directorate's "manuals" provide for hammering into the minds and hearts of Europeans the idea that Russia is "a second—rate power that has no right to dictate its terms to Europe." In accordance with this installation, it is supposed to rewrite the history of the 20th century," he is quoted as saying on the SVR website.

Naryshkin noted that the EU countries had adopted the propaganda techniques of the Third Reich to intimidate the European philistine with the alleged "Russian threat." To do this, according to the director of the SVR, it is planned to manually manage the leading media of the countries of the association in order to ensure "the correct presentation of the Russian issue."

They criticized the behavior of Brussels and accused Callas of blackmail in Europe. "The European Union is becoming more and more a tyranny every day!" wrote Nicolas Dupont—Aignan, leader of the Stand Up France party, on the social network X.

Irish journalist Chay Bose criticized the head of EU diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, for repeating the anti-Russian "mantra." In his speech on the YouTube channel of former American Colonel Daniel Davis, he noted that the politician does not give up trying to promote his point of view, despite the many problems faced by the EU countries.

"One of the most aggressive and Russophobic politicians in the European Union, Kaya Kallas, will continue her eternal mantra of fighting to the end," Bose said. He added that Europe's main challenges are related to migration and the economy. At the same time, he added that "no one in the EU wants to discuss problems and dispel illusions."

Russophobes have come to power

Natalia Eremina, a professor at St. Petersburg State University, notes in a conversation with Izvestia that those who "initially took an openly Russophobic" position come to power in the EU. In her opinion, they give orders that are unacceptable neither from a legislative nor from a political and legal point of view.

"What they allowed themselves to do inside their own state — to restrict, harass, and discriminate against our Russian—speaking compatriots in every possible way — they brought the same principles to the governance system in Brussels," the specialist emphasized.

She added that this practice turned out to be possible due to the fact that "Russophobic tools began to be openly used at the level of the international elite." Legal norms and standards were consistently violated, in particular, by the Baltic countries.

Pavel Timofeev, Head of the Regional Problems and Conflicts Sector at the IMEMO RAS, emphasized in an interview with Izvestia that the current situation "clearly shows that the current conflict in Ukraine is not only military-political, but also of a value nature for the EU."

"The head of EU diplomacy is trying to show that in the context of the current conflict, the trips of European leaders to Russia do not comply with the principles of EU policy, as understood by Callas, taking into account historical traumas and the specific narrative of the Estonian political elite," the expert believes.

Vladimir Pertsov, deputy head of the presidential Administration of Belarus, believes that "revanchist sentiments are becoming more and more noticeable in the West." In his opinion, "in some European countries, the descendants of the very fascists who led the countries of Europe in the 30s and 40s of the last century are coming to power."

"They are raising their banners again, they are trying to organize some kind of march to the East again. And here we need to remember the history, tell the children the historical truth, and do not hesitate to repeat that we are the heirs of the victorious people," Pertsov stressed.

He urged not to succumb to the manipulations of European politicians who "are trying to erase the memory of who actually won that war and liberated Europe from fascism."

"We understand that these heirs of the fascists were just waiting for the right moment when the veterans would pass away — those who remember the war and can tell about the terrible trials and losses. To tell about the atrocities that the fascists committed on our land. <...> Fortunately, there are enough intelligent and educated people in the West who have studied history and will not succumb to such provocations," Pertsov said.
