Happy Easter: vintage retro postcards

Postcards are one of the most versatile and popular ways to wish Easter greetings. It is also one of the oldest — in Europe, cards with bright drawings and wishes began to be sent as early as the 1880s. They did this not only on the Lord's Resurrection, but also on other holidays: Christmas, Angel's Day, etc.

In Russia, the "trend" for such congratulations came a few years later. The first collection of Easter cards in our country appeared in 1898 on the initiative of the St. Eugenia Red Cross Community. They depicted four spring watercolors by the artist Nikolai Karamzin.

Subsequently, the publishing house at the Community became one of the largest producers of postcards in the country. Over 20 years of operation, it has issued more than 6 thousand types of greeting cards for Easter and other holidays. The illustrations for them were created by famous artists of that time: Ivan Bilibin, Boris Zvorykin, Ilya Repin, Alexander Benois and others.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Easter postcards became one of the most sought-after types of printing products in Russia. Gradually, commercial publishers and foreign printing houses began to join their creation. This continued until the revolution of 1917, after which religious holidays and postcards dedicated to them were banned. The tradition of exchanging Easter cards began to revive only after the Great Patriotic War, and it finally returned only in the 1980s.

Pre-revolutionary Easter postcards got a second wind with the development of the Internet. Every year, thousands of users send digital copies of them to each other, congratulating their relatives and friends on the Resurrection of the Lord. Such retro postcards are appreciated for their unique designs, unusual subjects, and the pleasant feeling of nostalgia they evoke.
