Matvienko called the idea of holding events on May 9 in Kiev a theater of absurdity.

On April 18, Federation Council Chairman Valentina Matvienko described the proposal of some European politicians to hold events in Kiev dedicated to Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War as a "theater of the absurd."
It is specified that the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, announced his intention to resist the "parade of Russian leader Vladimir Putin" in Moscow on May 9. In this regard, he invited the leaders of the European Union (EU) to visit Kiev on this day, urging the allies to demonstrate their unity.
"This is some kind of theater of the absurd," she told reporters after laying flowers at the Piskarevsky Memorial in St. Petersburg.
According to Matvienko, reasonable politicians will never go to this Kiev "sabbath." She added that the regime of the Ukrainian president, which chose Hitler's accomplices Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukhevych as national heroes, has no moral right to hold events dedicated to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
On April 14, the head of the European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, warned European officials that if they visited Russia to participate in Victory celebrations, they would face "consequences."
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in turn, called her statement harsh and incorrect. He noted that such threats should be assessed by the States to which they are addressed.
