Herons are returning from wintering in the Leningrad region

Herons are gradually returning to the Leningrad Region after wintering. Biologist Pavel Glazkov told about this in the Telegram channel "Each creature has a pair".
According to him, the birds came from Western Europe or even from Africa. Every year, the herons return to their permanent nesting site, which is called the "heron nest". These birds build nests in tall trees and use them for many years.
There are several dozen known colonies in the Leningrad Region. There are two types of herons in the region: the great white and the grey. They live peacefully in the same colony.
The great white heron is a separate species. The height of the bird is about 1 m, and the wingspan is up to 1.5 m. This species first appeared in the Leningrad region about 10 years ago. The birds have settled in and are actively breeding.
The 78 TV channel notes that about 3,000 grey herons and about 300 great white herons live in the Leningrad region. No nesting facts of either grey or great white herons have been recorded in St. Petersburg so far.
Earlier it was reported that St. Petersburg will strengthen the protection of rare species of animals and plants. A special commission will be set up for this purpose. The Committee on Environmental Management has prepared a draft of the relevant resolution. The Commission will address issues related to the maintenance of the Red Book of St. Petersburg, the inclusion and exclusion of plant and animal species from it.
