The Taliban movement (which is under UN sanctions for terrorist activities) welcomes the decision of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation to suspend the ban on its activities in Russia. This was announced on April 17 by the head of the Taliban's political bureau in Qatar, the Afghan ambassador to the country, Suhel Shaheen.
"We welcome this rational decision of the Supreme Court of Russia. It was extremely necessary to expand cooperation and strengthen relations between the two countries," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.
He stressed that the two countries need to remove all obstacles to their relations and move forward in identifying areas of cooperation and taking practical measures.
The Afghan Embassy also welcomed the decision to suspend the ban on the movement's activities and noted that this measure would help strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
On April 17, the Supreme Court of Russia suspended the ban and excluded the Taliban movement from the list of terrorist organizations, an Izvestia correspondent reported from the courtroom. The initiative to change the legal status of the movement was submitted to the General Prosecutor's Office on March 31.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on November 27, 2024, that without removing the status of terrorists from the Taliban, it is impossible to develop cooperation with Afghanistan in practice. In June of the same year, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that stability in Afghanistan was very important both for the Russian Federation and for other countries in the region, so it was necessary to build relations with the Taliban government.
