The doctor warned about the dangerous causes of hoarseness of the throat

Sudden changes in the timbre or strength of the voice often indicate health problems. Moreover, a person's voice may change with the development of various pathologies. Natalia Sekretareva, an otolaryngologist at Invitro, told Izvestia about which diseases a change in vocal characteristics may indicate.
According to the expert, the formation of a voice depends on many factors — anatomical features, gender, age, and even cultural traditions. However, the most common cause of hoarseness is laryngitis, which occurs with acute respiratory viral infections, hypothermia, or overexertion of the vocal cords. False croup and acute laryngotracheobronchitis, which cause laryngeal edema and respiratory disorders, are particularly dangerous for children.
The expert warned that hoarseness may indicate more serious problems: neurological paralysis of the larynx, benign tumors (fibroids, cysts, papillomas) or even cancer of the larynx. She clarified that cancer is especially common in smokers and alcohol abusers.
"For example, laryngoscopy is used to assess the condition of the vocal cords and larynx, a culture is taken from the throat, X—rays, CT and MRI are performed," Sekretareva shared.
The doctor emphasized the importance of prevention: maintaining immunity, giving up bad habits, weight control and reasonable use of the vocal cords.
"Stress can cause functional disorders, and being overweight can interfere with normal breathing," the doctor warned.
She also noted that shouting and loud speech should be avoided, especially during illness or fatigue, and taking breaks during vocal exertion.
Earlier, on April 15, oncologist, oncosurgeon of JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg clinic), PhD Ruslan Basanov told Izvestia about the first symptoms of throat cancer. He clarified that in the late stages, enlarged lymph nodes, severe weight loss and persistent bad breath, unrelated to hygiene, are added to the signs of throat cancer. Also, according to him, at first a tumor no larger than 2 cm is localized in one area of the mucous membrane. As it grows, it begins to affect neighboring tissues, and when it reaches 4 cm, it already noticeably affects the voice and swallowing process. In advanced cases, cancer cells spread throughout the body, causing severe pain and complete inability to eat properly.
