Various signs may indicate the imminent failure of the car. Alexander Kornev, head of the department for work with importers at Gazprombank Autoleasing, told Izvestia on April 18 what to look for when operating the machine to prevent breakage.
"Let's start with the most obvious, but for some reason the most frequently ignored factor. Some drivers brush off traces of liquids at the parking lot of their car to the last. Black smudges appear in cars with the engine running, which has lost its tightness. A large black puddle usually flows from a punctured crankcase pan or due to a faulty oil filter. You can't go any further, you should definitely check the oil level and call a tow truck," he explained.
The expert also noted that reddish or greenish liquids flow from an automatic transmission or a variator, gearbox or distributor in SUVs. In this situation, the car owner must go to the service for diagnosis.
"If a puddle appears in the area of the front bumper, it is most likely coolant from the radiator. You can drive with such a leak, but you need to check the liquid level in the tank or radiator," he said.
If a yellowish spot appears near the wheels, it may be brake fluid. In such a situation, you cannot operate a car.
However, the expert advised to pay attention to the exhaust. If it turns black, it means that the fuel mixture is overly enriched or the fuel is of poor quality. Blue smoke indicates the ingress of oil into the combustion chamber, bluish smoke indicates an admixture of antifreeze. The driver will need to find out why this happened.
"Problems with external signs may also be indicated by uneven wear of the rubber. The outer "eaten" edge most often appears due to a downed camber. Tired suspension arms wear out the inside of the wheels, which grind on the move and rub against the asphalt. Poorly balanced discs wear off the tread in waves, because the rubber literally jumps on the road. It happens that shock absorbers, hub bearings or front suspension hinges that have come up for replacement give such an effect," Kornev added.
In addition, whistling or clanking in the engine compartment may occur due to a worn-out drive belt.
Uneven engine operation most often indicates a malfunction in the ignition system or in the fuel system. If the car is pulled to the side during braking, vibration appears on the steering wheel or there seems to be less connection between it and the wheels, this means that there are problems with the steering rack, suspension or brakes, the expert explained.
Also, increased fuel consumption often means spark plug wear, a problem with the injection system or the fuel system. The smell of burning during braking indicates a problem with the calipers.
"With the constant "aroma" of burning, you need to go to the service right away, and preferably by tow truck. Perhaps the wiring is smoldering somewhere, something is rubbing strongly or heating up, so you can't take risks and delay," Kornev stressed.
In addition, sudden electronic shutdowns, dim headlights, and fading power windows occur on cars with a poorly functioning generator or a problematic battery.
"Some malfunctions manifest themselves only under certain conditions or even randomly. The car can trip on cold weather, and turn off all electronics in the heat, but the rest of the time it drives without problems. The same applies to errors on the dashboard, which many owners dismiss to the last. Such signs most often have a reason. At least we can make a diagnosis to find out the problem and figure out its further solution," Kornev concluded.
Earlier, on March 14, SberAuto told Izvestia that if you have basic tools and skills, independent tire installation can lead to unpleasant consequences. They stressed that it is worthwhile to change only the wheel assemblies on your own — it is difficult to properly install the disc without experience and equipment.
