Denmark could send 100 armed soldiers to Greenland and introduce military service on the island for the kingdom's security. This proposal was made on April 17 by the representative of the Danish People's Party on defense issues, Alex Arendtsen.

"It is necessary to send a signal that we are defending the kingdom. It is also necessary to involve the Greenlanders so that they take on greater responsibility and help protect the kingdom," he said in an interview with Danmarks radio.

According to Arendtsen, the military should also have anti-ship missiles in its arsenal. According to the idea of the party representative, all men and women permanently residing in Greenland can enlist in military service, but they are not obligated to do so.

"We have a commonwealth. Everyone must do their part to protect the kingdom. In the long term, this should also apply to the Faroe Islands," he said.

On April 14, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen announced that Denmark could terminate the defense cooperation agreement with the United States if Washington decides to terminate its membership in NATO. Rasmussen also called the membership of the United States and Denmark in NATO a key condition for the operation of the agreement between the countries and pointed out that there were no signs that the United States would leave the alliance.

In December last year, US President Donald Trump said that for the United States, ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity. Prior to that, he expressed interest in buying the island from Denmark in 2019, but was refused. In 2025, Trump was also told that the island was not for sale and would not be, but Denmark could cooperate more with the United States. On March 30, Greenland's new prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, accurately stated that the United States would not receive the island. According to him, "it was like that yesterday, it is like that today, and it will be like that in the future."
