In Russia, biotechnologists have created the first domestic neonatal screening kit. The development was presented by the anchor resident of the Slava Technopark, the Moscow Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovative Development told Izvestia on April 20.

The kit covers 36 diseases and works using chromatography-mass spectrometry, a recognized "gold standard" for the accuracy of laboratory diagnostic research in the world.

Neonatal screening of newborns is necessary for early detection of congenital and hereditary pathologies. This study is conducted for children in the first days of life. European products have traditionally been used for screening in Russian maternity hospitals.

Due to the risks of stopping the supply of manufacturers' kits, the Russian company Chromolab has created a formulation and tested a domestic kit for neonatal screening. The development has already been registered. One set is enough to perform analyses of 960 samples.

"Domestic products help to reduce dependence on imported manufacturers, minimize the risks of price increases, disruptions in the delivery of imported goods due to logistical restrictions and prohibitions from unfriendly countries," explained Pavel Glagovsky, CEO of Chromsystem Club.

Earlier, on February 24, Sergey Kutsev, Director of the Academician N.P. Bochkov Medical and Genetic Research Center (MGNC), Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told the Izvestia press center that the federal expanded neonatal screening program, which was launched in Russia in 2023, had shown its effectiveness. Screening work is carried out in all Russian regions, coverage — taking samples from newborns — is 99%.
