The economist predicted the easing of US sanctions against Russia
The American authorities may ease sanctions pressure on Russia in the coming years. The West is suffering significant economic losses due to the current restrictions, and lifting them would be beneficial for the United States. Maxim Chirkov, Associate Professor of the Department of Economic Policy and Economic Measurements at GUU, told Izvestia on April 17.
The day before, Bloomberg reported that US President Donald Trump may lift sanctions against Russia to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
"For the United States, lifting sanctions against Russia is the most beneficial solution for today. Western countries are losing their investment attractiveness, and their financial and economic infrastructure is becoming less competitive," Chirkov said.
According to him, despite the political difficulties, some Western leaders may begin to reconsider their sanctions policy, as they understand the benefits of lifting restrictions.
Among the key factors that could push the United States to ease sanctions, the expert called the declining role of the dollar in international settlements, the outflow of investment and falling demand for U.S. government debt.
"Statistics show that the dollar's share in reserves and payments is decreasing. The United States is losing influence, and sanctions are only exacerbating the situation. A full—scale lifting of sanctions will not happen overnight, but in 2025-2026 we will see a gradual reduction in pressure," Chirkov concluded.
On April 16, the Federation Council announced that the United States should lift anti-Russian sanctions in the aviation sector against the background of China's refusal to purchase Boeing aircraft. It was clarified that this would be a severe blow to the American economy and to Boeing, which has already been experiencing difficulties in recent years.
