The documentary film "COSMOS. THE NUCLEAR BATTLEGROUND" from NMG DOC received two prizes at the Tsiolkovsky International Space Film and Program Festival, which was held in Kaluga and the Kaluga Region on April 12-16, 2025. The president of the festival is Igor Ugolnikov.

The film directed by Sergey Kozhevnikov won the Prize of the president of the festival. In addition, the film was named the best based on the results of a vote by journalists who watched the competition entries. Alexey Urusov, the writer and editor-in-chief of AiF-Kaluga, presented a special prize for the 70th anniversary of the Baikonur Cosmodrome to Anna Kolodezneva, the screenwriter of the film, from the journalistic community.

Today, the world is facing a new challenge – the militarization of outer space. All communications and most types of weapons are provided and controlled from space. Military and dual–use satellites are a strategically important part of the modern confrontation, without which victory is unthinkable either on the battlefield or in the political arena. Should space remain peaceful? Will conflicts between states spread to near-Earth space? Who can counter these threats and how?

For the first time, the creators of the new film talk about how the battles for space and in space take place: starting with the history of nuclear explosions in the stratosphere and ending with the latest ways to destroy enemy satellites. For many years, this arms race between the two superpowers – the USSR (and later Russia) and the United States – remained secret. But it was she who made it possible to make scientific and technical breakthroughs and introduce mass inventions that changed the lives of millions of people. However, new players are now increasingly claiming a military presence in space. The authors of the film "Cosmos. The Nuclear Battlefield" answers the question of how Russia maintains its leadership in this area.
