Sergey Glazyev became the new state secretary of the Union State of Russia and Belarus. This was announced on April 17 by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko during a meeting with the official himself.

"We have made the decision to appoint you as the head and engine of our Union integration in terms of leading the entire apparatus of the Union State. I think the effect will be good," BelTA quoted him as saying.

According to Lukashenko, the decision was made with the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Belarusian head of state also noted that the movement towards the "closest" union of Belarus and Russia should be based on economic contacts.

Earlier that day, Putin appointed Dmitry Mezentsev, who served as the State Secretary of the Union State and represented Russia in various international structures, as the presidential envoy to the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation.

Prior to that, on April 2, the Russian leader said that the joint actions of Russia and Belarus ensure the strengthening of the defense potential and reliable security of the Union State. According to him, both countries defend legitimate foreign policy interests and work with foreign partners to form a multipolar world order.
