Narcologist Alexander Kovtun told Izvestia on April 16 about the effect on the body of the powerful narcotic substance sibutramine, which was found in the popular weight loss drug "Molecule".

"Sibutramine was developed by one of the pharmaceutical companies in the early 2000s for the treatment of depression," said the narcologist.

During clinical trials, it was revealed that the drug has the ability to reduce appetite. According to the expert, many antidepressants have the opposite property. Because of this, experts assumed that the drug would be without such a side effect, without losing its effectiveness. However, upon further investigation, it was concluded that the antidepressant effect was small.

Subsequently, sibutramine began to be recommended for weight loss. Experts advised using the drug for several months. According to the narcologist, if a person took a substance in accordance with therapeutic recommendations, then he should not have got used to it.

Earlier, as part of a laboratory study conducted by Izvestia, it was revealed that the "Molecule" weight loss drug contains the potent narcotic substance sibutramine. It is specified that criminal liability is threatened for its distribution. Later, Rospotrebnadzor requested documents on the detection of sibutramine in popular weight loss products — "Molecule" and "Molecule plus".
