The Federation Council at the plenary session approved the candidacy of Alexander Konovalov for the post of judge of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation. This was announced on April 16 by the press service of the upper house of Parliament.
"Following the discussion, the Federation Council decided to appoint him (Konovalov) as a judge of the Constitutional Court," the Federation Council said in a statement on its website.
It is specified that the chairman of the Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko, presented Konovalov with the mantle of judge of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation.
After the meeting, Konovalov took the oath of the judge and "certified it with his personal signature."
Konovalov previously served as the plenipotentiary representative of the President of the Russian Federation to the Constitutional Court, and from 2008 to 2020 he headed the Ministry of Justice.
On April 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Lieutenant General Vyacheslav Butko Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation. Since 2020, Butko has served as the head of the Academy of the State Fire Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia. The presidential decree also relieves him of this position.
