- Zakharova called Zelensky's invitation of the EU heads of state to Kiev on May 9 a theater of the absurd.

The intention of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to invite the heads of the European Union (EU) countries to Kiev on May 9 can be called a "theater of the absurd." This was announced on April 16 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"This is what can be described by an expression that we started using about a year ago in 2013 <...>. This expression was first used then and began to be systematically used. This expression is a theater of the absurd," she said on Sputnik radio.
According to her, for over 10 years, this expression has been used to characterize most of the events, steps and statements by the "so-called collective West," complementing "Газета.Ru ".
On April 15, the Politico newspaper, citing Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga, reported on Kiev's invitation to the EU heads of state on May 9. According to the publication, the country did this to distract attention from the Moscow parade on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
The next day, the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs, Kaya Kallas, warned European officials that if they visited Russia to participate in Victory celebrations, they would face "consequences."
In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called her statement harsh and incorrect, and also noted that such threats should be assessed by those states to which they are addressed.
