"First of all, this syndrome is associated with excessive single meals: for example, a person manages to eat once a day or has a habit of not having breakfast and subsequently overeats at lunch," the expert explained.
According to the doctor, overeating increases blood flow in the digestive organs, while brain activity decreases. This mechanism has been embedded in the body since ancient times, when people rested after getting food.
In addition, drowsiness is provoked by foods with a high glycemic index, the nutritionist warned. So, many fast snacks cause a sharp spike in blood sugar followed by a rapid drop, which worsens well-being.
As Arzamastsev pointed out, this condition is especially dangerous for those whose activities require constant attention, for example, for drivers.
The doctor drew attention to the fact that factors that provoke food coma are harmful to the body. Too frequent consumption of refined foods disrupts intestinal function and carbohydrate metabolism, the nutritionist noted. He also added that systematic overeating negatively affects the pancreas and increases the risk of developing diabetes.
Arzamastsev advised not to skip breakfast and divide lunch into two meals: the main one, which includes proteins and vegetables, and a light snack.
It is also important to improve the quality of nutrition, while reducing the consumption of foods devoid of nutrients.
To maintain energy and vigor, the body needs proper rest, so it is necessary to adjust the daily routine and ensure a healthy sleep, the nutritionist emphasized.
In addition, Arzamastsev said that the normal level of vitamins and trace elements plays a key role in metabolism and energy exchange.
"Deviations can be detected by a doctor based on the results of a biochemical blood test," the expert concluded.
