Specialists of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia have started preclinical trials of a new dementia drug that can restore cognitive functions in people with Alzheimer's disease.

Tests on rodents, in which the pathology was specially induced, confirmed that after taking the drug, the animals' ability to learn increased. Then scientists analyzed their brains and found that the field of taking the substance several times reduced the number of amyloid plaques, which are associated with the development of neurodegeneration. According to the developers, the drug has no analogs in the world yet.

"Partly similar to it is a protein complex called cerebrolysin. It is derived from the brain of pigs, so it can cause a very strong immune response in humans. There have also been developed drugs - inhibitors of various receptors and antibodies to beta-amyloid, but all of them failed clinical trials," said Diana Salikhova, head of the Laboratory of Cell Biotechnologies at PFUR.

Existing remedies only manage some symptoms of the disease, and not all of them, she emphasized.
