Illness, melancholy and fatigue when returning to work after a long rest are caused by post-discharge syndrome. Oksana Sadykova, a psychotherapist and somnologist at the SM Clinic, told Gazeta about this on Tuesday, April 15.Ru».

As the specialist explained, post—discharge syndrome is a temporary state of adaptation characterized by physical fatigue, mood deterioration, decreased motivation and concentration, nostalgia for rest, irritability, headaches, heaviness in the stomach, changes in appetite and stool, as well as sleep disorders - lack or excess.

The expert clarified that this condition does not relate to clinical depression and usually resolves within one to two weeks.

Sadykova identified two main causes of post-discharge syndrome. The first is stress, which occurs as a reaction to any changes, including positive ones.

"Not only unpleasant events are accompanied by stress, but also pleasant ones, because they contain an element of novelty, for example, a wedding, the birth of a child, travel," said the interlocutor of the publication.

The doctor referred to the founder of the theory of stress, Hans Selye. So, he identified three key signs of stress: an increase in the adrenal glands, a decrease in lymph nodes and the appearance of ulcers on the gastric mucosa. In response to stress, the autonomic nervous system is activated. This, in particular, leads to headaches, constipation, stomach discomfort and bloating. In addition, a weakened immune system provokes frequent colds during or after a vacation, and hormonal changes cause irritability and anxiety, the expert said.

Sadykova named a violation of the biological rhythms of the body as the third cause of post-discharge syndrome.

"Removing their (internal clock. Out of rhythm leads to the elimination of rhythms of other body systems: cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, hormonal, immune. That's why it's so important to follow a sleep and rest regime to help the body adapt," the expert noted.

And to make it easier to return to the usual rhythm after the vacation, the specialist gave a number of recommendations.

First, Sadykova called for a gradual return to normal life, without overloading yourself with new experiences and activities in the early days.

Secondly, she advised to live according to local time from the first day of vacation and after it, using the "11 o'clock" rule: if you arrive in the morning, you can sleep until 11:00, and if in the afternoon or evening — go to bed early.

And in conclusion, the psychotherapist recommended to ease the work of the gastrointestinal tract. According to her, it is worth avoiding overeating heavy foods, preferring small portions rich in protein and fiber, and increasing water intake, as well as temporarily abstaining from alcohol.

On April 12, Arsen Sarkisov, founder of the ARS Insurance consulting company, told Izvestia that insufficient motivation and involvement of employees in the workflow can lead to a decrease in productivity. According to him, low wages, limited career prospects, and lack of recognition from management reduce employee motivation.
