The words of US President Donald Trump about new sanctions against Russia are directed more towards the United States. Konstantin Blokhin, a leading researcher at the Center for Security Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences, and an American political scientist, expressed this opinion on Tuesday, April 15.

He noted that the American leader needs to maintain a very delicate balance.

"On the one hand, we need to show ourselves to be a tough politician towards Russia. Because many "hawks" criticize him for conflating the national interests of the United States by trying to negotiate with the Russians. On the other hand, in reality, we see from these rounds of negotiations how Washington wants to get out of the Ukrainian conflict," the expert said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .

According to the political scientist, this rhetoric is both an attempt to show rigidity within the United States and to put pressure on the Russian Federation.

"But we see that against the background of this trade war that Trump has waged with the rest of the world, Russia has not been subject to duties. Because there is practically no economic interdependence between the United States and Russia. And so we are already under sanctions. At the same time, Washington is trying to reach an agreement with Moscow. Therefore, most likely, it should be perceived as words that are addressed to an internal audience," he added.

He added that so far the talks about the introduction of new sanctions are just words.

"But in reality, we see the desire of the United States to normalize relations with Russia in the economic sphere," concluded Blokhin.

On the same day, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) wrote that the Trump team is discussing plans to impose new sanctions against Russia, according to the website. kp.ru .

According to the newspaper, the Ministry of Finance and the US State Department are already dealing with the issue of tightening anti-Russian sanctions, reports NSN.

On the eve of the Democrats in the United States House of Representatives introduced a bill that should put pressure on the Trump administration and support Ukraine, RT reports. According to the Reuters news agency, the law should provide financing for the security and reconstruction of the country, as well as introduce strict restrictions against the Russian Federation.
