Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan stated that he did not agree with the words of the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs Kai Kallas about the inadmissibility of the candidate countries' participation in the parade on May 9 in honor of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War (WWII) in Moscow. He told reporters about this on April 15.

"The victory on May 9th is also our victory. We had 300,000 dead, so many people did not return [from the front]. Not to mention that there were Armenians in the Resistance movement too. This is one of the days that we are proud of," Sputnik Armenia quoted him as saying.

The Speaker of the parliament stressed that the participation of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in the Victory Day celebrations "can in no way be related" to the EU or other issues.

Simonyan added that Armenia has its own interests, which it intends to take into account when building relations with other countries.

Earlier in the day, Simonyan announced that Pashinyan would attend the Victory Day Parade in Moscow on May 9. It is specified that the agreement on the arrival of the head of government in the Russian capital was reached during his telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On April 14, Kallas announced that the participation of EU countries in the May 9 parade in Moscow is not planned. She added that European officials who will travel to Moscow on May 9 will face "consequences." The High Representative of the association clarified that the participation of EU candidate countries in the Victory Day parade is also undesirable.
