In Russia, a bank was fined for sending personal data to WhatsApp

For the first time, a Russian court has prosecuted a financial institution for using a foreign messenger to transfer a citizen's personal data. This was reported to Izvestia by Roskomnadzor (RCN) on April 15.
They clarified that a resident of Moscow had contacted the service with evidence of the bank's violation of the law. During the trial, it turned out that an employee of a credit institution, contrary to the ban, sent a message to the debtor from the corporate number via WhatsApp (owned by Meta, whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
"The bank was found guilty under Article 13.11.2 of the Administrative Code and fined 200,000 rubles for communicating with the debtor via WhatsApp," the RCN said.
On March 1, 2023, a ban on the use of foreign messengers in the provision of financial and government services came into force in the Russian Federation. At the same time, on June 20, 2023, the State Duma imposed fines of up to 700 thousand rubles for financial organizations and government agencies for sending legally significant documents in foreign messengers.
