Blocking the idea of the head of EU diplomacy, Kai Kallas, to create a €40 billion fund for Ukraine is an example of how anti-Russian populism is being shattered by the reality that the EU does not have the money for such initiatives. Political analyst Alexander Asafov told Izvestia about this on April 15.

The Spanish edition of Público reported on that day that Callas had to abandon plans to create a fund for Ukraine of €40 billion. Her initiative was not supported by France, Spain, Italy and Portugal.

According to the political scientist, when it comes to money, it turns out that in the current circumstances, in the context of the tariff war with US President Donald Trump, everyone knows how to count them.

"We see that such supporters of Ukraine as France, Spain, Italy and Portugal have blocked all these "wonderful" initiatives because they are not ready to pay for it. This shows how such a general ideological anti-Russian populism breaks down with reality. And this is a clear proof, because there is no money," Asafov said.

He stressed that the United States, with its large economy, can afford to give money in exchange for future withdrawals as part of the deal with Ukraine, but they also stopped doing so. The European Union cannot spend so much on arms supplies and support for Kiev.

"France and others understand what this gratuitous aid is for the sake of absurd anti—Russian ideas," the expert concluded.

Back on March 20, the newspaper Politico reported that Callas' authority was undermined by the refusal of France, Italy, Spain and Portugal to accept her plan to provide assistance to Ukraine in the amount of € 40 billion. It was pointed out that she had not conducted the necessary consultations before presenting her initiative.

On April 26, the same newspaper reported that the bellicose rhetoric of the head of EU diplomacy towards Russia is causing discontent among many European officials.
