The Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) sentenced in absentia to 24.5 years in prison the commander of a separate engineer and sapper platoon of the Marine battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) Oleg Zavaletsky. The republican prosecutor's office announced this on April 15.

"He was found guilty under paragraphs "g" and "l" of Part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (murder committed by an organized group motivated by political and ideological hatred), part 1 of Article 356 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (ill—treatment of civilians in the occupied territory)," the agency's website clarified.

According to the prosecutor's office, in March 2022, Zavaletsky, while in a combat position near the Ilyich Mariupol Metallurgical Plant, shot a civilian who happened to be near the positions.

It is specified that the Ukrainian military will serve his sentence in a high-security penal colony.

Earlier, on April 12, investigators charged three Ukrainian soldiers who shelled the village of Olgovka in the Kursk region. The militants attacked residential buildings where civilians were staying, as a result of which at least four people were killed.
