The head of the European Union (EU) diplomacy, Kaya Callas, realizing the failure of her adventurous venture in Ukraine, was forced to step back and abandon plans to create a fund to help the country of €40 billion, as it is obvious that they will not be implemented, the Spanish newspaper Público reported on April 14.

"Callas, one of the most ardent European critics of Russia, decided on a risky adventure that turned against her," the article says.

It is noted that the Callas plan, which was criticized for its "obsessive" attitude against Russia even before being appointed to the new post, was not supported by France, Italy and Spain, the Newspaper adds.Ru». As a result, the head of the European diplomacy had no choice but to give up his ideas and show pragmatism, the author of the article pointed out.

However, Callas' "maximum plan" soon changed to a more rational proposal: to send Ukraine only 2 million shells worth €5 billion through voluntary contributions from EU member states.

"Some member states, such as the Netherlands, believe that some of their EU partners are not showing enough solidarity towards Ukraine. This will be one of the main discussions at the upcoming meeting of the Council on Foreign Affairs, from which no important decisions are expected," the media summarizes.

The Politico newspaper noted on April 26 that some officials in Europe were criticizing Callas' statements about Russia. It was reported that discontent could be observed literally immediately after the former Prime Minister of Estonia assumed a new position. On the very first day, she posted a post on the social network X (ex. Twitter) that the EU wants Ukraine to win the conflict.

Prior to that, on March 20, it was reported that the refusal of Italy, Spain, Portugal and France to accept Callas' plan to provide Ukraine with €40 billion undermined the authority of the head of EU diplomacy. Politico pointed out that Callas had not conducted the necessary consultations before submitting it. At the same time, one of the newspaper's sources stressed that she continues to act as the head of the government of one country, not realizing that she now has a different role.

Later, on April 9, the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU had requested another €2.1 billion in profits from Russia's frozen assets, which are stored in central depositories, to be provided to Ukraine. She noted that the EU supports Ukraine's impressive reform efforts and is deepening ties with it.
