Staff of the administration of US President Donald Trump, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Keith Kellogg, advise him to take a tougher stance towards Russia in resolving the conflict in Ukraine. The Wall Street Journal reported on this on Monday, April 14.

American officials advised Trump to be very careful when dealing with Russian President Vladimir Putin and to take a tougher stance on Russia's demands.

However, Trump still believes that the Russian president wants to make peace, the newspaper writes.

Putin's meeting with Witkoff took place in St. Petersburg on April 11. It was clarified that the topic of the negotiations was aspects of the Ukrainian settlement. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in turn, said before the start of the talks that the meeting between Putin and Witkoff was a good opportunity to convey to Trump the point of view of the Russian side.
