The election of Russian—born politician Daniel Sazonov as mayor of Helsinki will in no way affect the country's foreign policy, moreover, Finnish propagandists can use this fact for their own purposes. Political analyst Maxim Reva told Izvestia about this on April 14.

"So far, no warming is expected [in relations with Russia], no matter which politicians would like to do this, because this is a coordinated policy of the European Union and this, first of all, must be resolved in Brussels. For any [European] politician in the European Union, even if he really wanted to change something, it is quite dangerous," he said.

He advised not to expect any political changes in connection with Sazonov's election as mayor of the Finnish capital.

"On the contrary, I can say that the right Finnish propagandists can use his origin for their own purposes. "Look at our democracy, even a Russian can become mayor" — something like that," the political scientist admitted.

Reva concluded that Sazonov's election would have no effect on the country's foreign policy.

Regional and municipal elections were held in Finland on April 13. In Helsinki, the victory was won by the National Coalition Party, represented by Sazonov. He was born in 1993 in Helsinki, but has Russian roots — his parents immigrated to Finland from St. Petersburg in the 1990s.

On April 1, Finnish President Alexander Stubb noted that the country should prepare for the return of relations with Russia. At the same time, he stressed that the resumption of dialogue between the two countries would depend on the end of the conflict in Ukraine. On April 5, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said that the country does not perceive Russia as an enemy, but considers it premature to restore bilateral relations.
