- Callas announced a plan to consider the 17th package of sanctions against Russia in May.

The Foreign Ministers of the European Union (EU) plan to consider the 17th package of sanctions against Russia in May. This was stated on April 14 by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaya Kallas, following a ministerial meeting in Luxembourg.
"We are working on the 17th package of sanctions," she said.
Callas pointed out that new measures related to the so-called "shadow fleet" may be included there. The new package of anti-Russian sanctions is planned to be discussed at a meeting of the Council on Foreign Affairs, which will be held in May.
"Of course, you know that imposing sanctions on oil and gas <...> would have a great effect <...>. Discussions are ongoing, but you know perfectly well that we need 27 countries to come to an agreement," Kallas added, referring to other possible new restrictions.
On February 14, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrault called on the European Union (EU) to impose "the heaviest sanctions" against Russia. According to him, he wants to "strangle" the Russian economy and prevent the country from reinforcing its military efforts.
