Support for the economic policy of American leader Donald Trump may decrease if trade duties affect the lives of ordinary Americans. This was announced to Izvestia on April 14 by the program manager of the Russian Council on International Affairs (RIAC). Konstantin Sukhoverkhov.

According to a CBS poll, support for Trump's economic policy is declining in the United States. According to its results, 59% of Americans said that the President of the United States intends to use duties for negotiations and cancel them later. 41% of respondents expressed the opposite point of view. More than 2.4 thousand adult citizens of the United States participated in the survey.

"Indeed, Trump considers the imposition of duties as a way for additional negotiations with US trading partners, as well as as a way to bargain for more favorable terms for cooperation with other countries," the expert noted.

He stressed that in the case of Canada and Mexico, this policy worked — negotiations between the heads of state and the American leader were organized, as a result of which decisions were made to suspend the imposition of duties and revise tariffs.

"The Trump administration's rating will decrease economically if this policy of duties, let's call it that conditionally, hits the wallet of an ordinary working American directly," Sukhoverkhov said.

At the moment, the United States has suspended the previously imposed duties for more than 75 countries for 90 days. As the expert noted, the economic initiative can affect Americans only if, after this period, Trump fails to conclude more favorable trade deals to reduce tariffs.

"All the effects of economic sanctions and economic tariffs are stretched over time. That is, the effect of the introduction of duties will not be tomorrow anyway," the political scientist said.

Commenting on Trump's plans to impose duties on foreign semiconductors, Sukhoverkhov said that the relevant measures would "hit" not only foreign manufacturing companies, but also American businesses that own factories in other countries and manufacture their products there.

"Globally, Donald Trump, through duties and bans, is trying to ensure that companies that want to trade duty-free with the United States have their production facilities in the United States. <...> In this way, they provide jobs directly in the United States. Plus, it will still bring great profits to the [American] economy, because these companies will pay taxes," Sukhoverkhov explained.

On April 10, Trump postponed the imposition of duties for 90 days for 75 countries. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, in turn, clarified that almost 70 countries had contacted the presidential administration with a request to negotiate on the issue of the duties imposed. According to him, he and U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer are currently negotiating with representatives from Japan. On April 13, Trump told reporters that he would announce tariffs on semiconductor supplies next week.
