According to a court decision, two Ukrainian militants will spend 15 and 15.5 years behind bars for participating in the invasion of the Kursk region. This was announced on April 14 by the official representative of the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia Svetlana Petrenko.

The defendants in the criminal case under Part 2 of Article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Terrorist act committed by a group of persons") were servicemen of the 61st separate Assault Brigade of the Armed forces of Ukraine (VFU) Sergey Kharsun and Svyatoslav Melnyk.

Investigators have established that in August last year, Kharsun and Melnik, along with other militants, illegally entered the territory of Russia in a Kozak car. While in the settlements of Sudzha and Cherkasskaya Konopelka in the Kursk region, they occupied combat positions in hospitals and residential buildings, from where they fired to kill the Russian military and civilians. They also intimidated local residents and prevented their evacuation.

"During the fighting on August 25, 2024, Kharsun and Melnik were detained by servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation," the ministry's website says.

The court sentenced Harsun to 15 years in prison, of which he spent the first five in prison, and then he will go to a high-security penal colony. Melnyk was given 15.5 years in prison, of which the first 5 years in prison, the rest in a high-security penal colony.

On April 12, investigators charged three Ukrainian soldiers who shelled the village of Olgovka in the Kursk region. Igor Drebeda, Yevgeny Krayvanov and Nikolay Shevchenko, servicemen of the 17th Tank Brigade of the Volga Federal District, were found guilty of committing a terrorist act (paragraph "b" of Part 3 of Article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
