Denmark may terminate the defense cooperation agreement with the United States if Washington decides to terminate its membership in NATO. This was reported on April 14 by TV2, citing a statement by Foreign Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen.

Sasha Faxe, a member of the Danish parliament from the Alternative party, asked the minister to confirm that the defense cooperation agreement cannot be terminated within ten years, "even if the United States withdraws from NATO."

However, Rasmussen could not confirm this statement and pointed out that the contract "may be terminated in a way other than denunciation or general agreement" if there are "very special circumstances."

Rasmussen also called the membership of the United States and Denmark in NATO a "key condition" for the operation of the agreement between the countries and pointed out that there were no signs that the United States would leave the alliance.

In 1951, Denmark and the United States signed an agreement to build 33 military bases and radar stations in Greenland.

On March 6, American leader Donald Trump considered changing the terms of U.S. participation in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. He discussed the possibility of providing support only to those alliance members who spend a certain percentage of their GDP on defense.

Ahead of his return to the White House in January, President Trump has increased pressure on NATO members to increase defense spending to 5%. Currently, only 23 of the 32 NATO countries reach the 2% of GDP target for defense spending, while Italy and Spain are among the EU countries that have not reached this threshold.
