On April 12, Belarusian border guards found the body of a refugee on the border with Latvia in the Vitebsk region. This was announced by the State Border Committee of Belarus.

"On April 12, Polotsk border guards found the body of a refugee without signs of life 10 meters from the Latvian border fence. An investigative task force was working at the scene to establish the circumstances of the incident and the causes of death," the department's Telegram channel said.

According to the Investigative Committee of Belarus, the deceased did not have any documents during the examination. Food products labeled with the country of origin, Latvia, were found among his personal belongings. Accordingly, the man was in the adjacent territory for some time when crossing the border, the agency clarifies.

"A forensic medical examination has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death. The Verkhnedvinsk district Department of the Investigative Committee is conducting an investigation into this fact," the Belarusian Investigative Committee added.

Earlier, on March 15, Latvia banned the passage of vehicles through the only open checkpoint on the border with Belarus. In addition, the Latvian side has installed special protective shields, so the movement of vehicles is stopped both at the entrance to Belarus and at the exit from the republic.
