A special military operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass has been conducted by Russia since February 24, 2022. The Ministry of Defense reported that on the eve of April 13, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched an Iskander strike at the meeting place of the command staff of the Ukrainian Seversk operational tactical group in Sumy. As a result, more than 60 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) were killed.

The military department also stressed that Kiev continues to use the Ukrainian population as a human shield, holding events with the participation of military personnel in the center of a densely populated city.

In addition, the Russian army eliminated six JDAM guided aerial bombs and three HIMARS multiple launch rocket launchers (MLRS) manufactured in the United States, as well as 227 aircraft-type drones (UAVs).

Also, units of the North group of forces in the Belgorod direction struck formations of a mechanized brigade, a coastal defense brigade of the Ukrainian army and two air defense brigades. The losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in this area amounted to 95 military personnel.

In total, since the beginning of the special military operation, 661 aircraft, 283 helicopters, 51,562 UAVs, 601 anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM), 22,833 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 1,536 MLRS combat vehicles, 23,602 field artillery and mortars, 34,087 units of special military vehicles have been destroyed.
