Russian-born MP Daniel Sazonov will become the new mayor of Helsinki, the Finnish Yle portal reported on April 14.

Regional and municipal elections were held in Finland on Sunday, April 13. In Helsinki, the "National Coalition Party" won the elections. Thus, it is her representative who should become the mayor of the city, which is Sazonov.

The politician was born in 1993 in Helsinki, but has Russian roots — his parents immigrated to Finland from St. Petersburg in the 1990s. At the age of nine, he and his mother became citizens of a new country, while renouncing Russian.

On April 5, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said that the country does not perceive Russia as an enemy, but considers it premature to restore bilateral relations. According to her, Finland hopes for good-neighborly relations, but it is too early to talk about their normalization.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb also said on April 1 that the country should prepare for the return of relations with Russia. He also stressed that the resumption of dialogue between the two countries would depend on the end of the conflict in Ukraine.
